According to a recent survey of moving patterns throughout the United States in 2021, several states saw significant population growth over the last year. Whether to be closer to family or for a new job, Americans flocked to a handful of states in search of a better life.

But no matter where you go in the country, VA is there to serve Veterans. With over 1,900 facilities across the United States and its territories across Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs), you can find a VA career wherever you live – or wherever you want to live.

Vermont

The Green Mountain State has the highest percentage of inbound migration in 2021, with the primary draws being career opportunities and being closer to family. Vermont is part of VISN 1, the VA New England Healthcare System, and is served primarily by the White River Junction VA Medical Center. There are also five outpatient clinics and two Veteran centers.

South Dakota

Being closer to family and careers were also ranked highly among those who moved to South Dakota. Half of those considering the Mount Rushmore State were between 45 and 64, though the 55 to 64 crowd tracked slightly higher than their younger counterparts.

South Dakota falls under the purview of VISN 23, VA Midwest Health Care Network. Medical centers are located in Fort Meade, Hot Springs, and Sioux Falls, with further support for local Veterans available at nine outpatient clinics and two Veteran centers.

South Carolina

Retirement was by far the biggest draw for those who chose to move to South Carolina in 2021, though the survey also tracked numerous transplants seeking to enjoy proximity to family and a better lifestyle.

VISN 7, the VA Southeast Network, supervises care for Veterans in South Carolina. The Columbia VA Health Care System manages on-the-ground duties in the state, with the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston serving as the primary facility for local Veterans. The medical center is supported, though, by 12 outpatient clinics and four Veteran centers.

West Virginia

People moved to West Virginia for a variety of reasons, including family, lifestyle and cost of living. Many who chose West Virginia as their new home were in the 35 to 44 year old age bracket, solidifying the state as a destination for professionals looking for a change.

Veteran care in West Virginia is managed under VISN 5, the VA Capitol Health Care Network. The Beckley VA Medical Center, the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, the Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center in Huntington, and the Martinsburg VA Medical Center offer care alongside 10 outpatient clinics and nine Veteran centers.

Florida

Florida also became a beacon for retirees in 2021, but the lifestyle in Florida was a positive draw for those making a change.

Florida is part of VISN 8, the VA Sunshine Healthcare Network. Eight medical centers, as well as numerous outpatient clinics and Veteran centers, are supervised under two health care systems: the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System and the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System.
