Are you familiar with the benefits and services VA provides for women Veterans? Women are the fastest growing group within the Veteran population, and VA is working to meet their needs.
On March 22, VA partnered with Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) to answer questions on Facebook about VA benefits and services for women Veterans. The chat addressed questions about gender-specific health care services and benefits available for women Veterans and their families. VA experts also answered questions submitted by Veterans and family members.
Check out some of the questions and answers from the chat below.
The first question addressed some of the general benefits and services available to women Veterans:
VA strives to improve its services for women Veterans. This question asked for examples of what VA has done to meet the needs of women who have served:
VA provides women Veterans the option to speak with female representatives or be seen by female physicians.
VA also provides a number of preventive services for women Veterans. You can learn more about VA health services for women at womenshealth.va.gov.
VA does offer gender-specific mental health services to meet the needs of women Vets. You can find nearby VA facilities with the VA locator tool. There are also 300 Vet Centers across the country that provide free counseling services to combat Veterans and survivors of military sexual trauma. Find your nearest Vet Center here.
Many of the questions asked by Facebook users were specific to their circumstances and required individual follow-up. VA asked these users to contact the Women Veterans Call Center at 1-855-VA WOMEN (1-855-829-6636), which is staffed by knowledgeable VA employees who can provide information about benefits, eligibility and services specifically for women Veterans. The call center is free and confidential.
