Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Llewellyn H. Baxter.
He began his Air Force career at 18 in 1941 and trained as a navigator and bombardier.
In late 1942 he completed US Army Signal Corps training and was recruited to become a pilot. He was commissioned and began training to fly the B-24.
A short while later, he started flying combat missions over Germany. He was shot down over Germany, but managed to land his crippled bomber in Belgium. He was held in Germany as a Prisoner of War from November 1944 until May 1945.
Lew went on to fly missions and support troops in Korea and Vietnam.
He medically discharged from the Air Force in 1968.
Lew passed away in October 2010.
We honor his service.
