VA’s Office of Information & Technology (OI&T) hosted its first IT Coding Bootcamp Nov. 11 to share the cutting edge work VA coders and developers are doing to improve the Veteran experience and to provide resources to help Veterans and their family members compete for IT related jobs.
During the bootcamp, five developers from the Software Engineering Division Office provided information on different coding languages, their current projects and their path to software development careers. Major topics covered during the webinar included: the agile development lifecycle, mobile application development, imaging, scheduling, patient records, 508 compliance, and accessibility. Webinar participants got a first-hand look at how developers contribute to cutting edge technologies that reinforce VA’s mission of serving America’s Veterans.
Members from VA’s Human Capital Management and Veterans Employment Center (VEC) provided helpful job search information for those interested in federal or IT careers. They shared information regarding the federal hiring process; the GS pay schedule, how to use Vets.gov, the free LinkedIn Premium Job Search subscription available to Veterans, and how to leverage VEC resources for job opportunities.
This event was advertised on the Veteran Employment Service Office (VESO) Facebook page, VA Facebook pages and the Veteran Benefits Administration (VBA) Twitter feed. VESO provides employment and career management resources designed to attract, retain, and support Veteran employees at VA and across the federal government. VBA provides a variety of benefits and services to Service members, Veterans, and their families; including but not limited to vocational rehabilitation, loan guaranty, and education services.

Over the past year, VA’s OI&T began a transformation to become less complex , but yet focus on developing technology that better serves the needs of Veterans and their families.
As an organization, OI&T prioritized three goals: stabilizing and streamlining core processes and platforms, eliminating material weaknesses and institutionalizing a new set of capabilities to drive improved outcomes.
We’ve already made considerable progress, including jumping from number 19 to number 5 in Office of Management and Budget’s annual IT customer service rankings. As we continue to transform into a world-class IT organization, we’re also committed to creating an environment where OI&T becomes the employer of choice for talented developers and statisticians, as well as individuals who are pursuing more administrative career paths.
