Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Susan Anita Green. Susan served during the Persian Gulf War.
Susan joined the ROTC program at Virginia State University because she felt a duty to serve her country. In September1990, Susan went to Saudi Arabia as a medical platoon officer.
In an interview with the Veterans History Project, Susan recalled the stresses of serving in a war zone. “Especially during the sirens,” she said. “Sirens would go off and we had to gather our equipment, all our equipment, our weapons and get into a bunker until the commander gave us the okay to come out…the siren was for possible chemical attack[s]. So, therefore, you were always under stress because you just never knew.”
After completing her service, Susan went back to school and now works for the United States Postal Service as a career mail handler.
“I think that if I had not have joined, then I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Susan said of her time in the service. “It has allowed me to have a good career job with the federal government and to support my family and I’m grateful for that overall. Even though I went through some challenging times…I don’t regret it at all because it allowed me to be where I am today.”
Thank you for your service, Susan!
