Continuing with our look at physical therapy careers this month, we interviewed Dale Chatham, the Rehabilitation Coordinator at our new medical center in New Orleans, to get his perspective on working at VA. Dale has been with our organization for over 30 years, so he has a wealth of insights to offer. And he was gracious enough to share a few of them in the following Q&A.
What are some new innovations within physical therapy at VA?
We use all the latest techniques, technologies and care models to treat Veterans. This includes a new hydro-works pool equipped with a treadmill, where we can perform advanced treatment processes. We also have new exercise equipment and Balance Quest machines, along with new technologies for patients with heart disease and traumatic brain injuries.
Do physical therapy professionals at VA work with other departments?
For our team to be at its best, we must collaborate with nearly every department, from social workers to prosthetics, surgical and medical services professionals. Everyone pitches in because each of us has an important role in caring for Veterans.
What are some qualities you look for in candidates applying for open positions?
I look for people who are patient, caring, and able to understand what our patients have been through. It’s all about giving something back to our Veterans, because they’ve given us so much. If you can do that, you’ll be successful here.
