Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Thomas Claw. Thomas served during World War II from 1943 to December 1945 as a Navajo Code Talker with the First Marine Division.

Thomas enlisted in the Marines at the age of 21. He completed basic training at Camp Elliott in San Diego, California, and was assigned the secret position of Navajo Code Talker. Using his native language, Thomas worked to covertly communicate U.S. military strategy across the Pacific Theatre against Japanese forces.

While stationed at Okinawa in June 1945, Thomas suffered an eye injury from shrapnel of a hand grenade while manning a security post. He recovered quickly, and was honorably discharged in December of the same year. Thomas received the a Purple Heart, a Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon and a Navy Unit Commendation Medal.

After his service Thomas lived in Parker, Arizona with his family and worked in the farming industry as well as for the local school district. Thomas passed away in May 2009. He is survived by his wife, five children, 11 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

We honor his service.
