Our next stop is the Fargo VA Health Care System, where Manager of Veterans Housing and Employment Programs, Diana Hall, is preparing for the potential development of a homeless “day center” in downtown Fargo. As part of the recently approved Downtown InFocus master plan, the facility would provide a place for homeless people to go during the day when emergency shelters close to guests. This would also help VA build on its commitment to preventing and ending Veteran homelessness.
Diana’s goal is to get the city and other homeless service providers to collaborate on the initiative and make the facility as comprehensive as possible, ideally with all available offerings in one spot. Visitors could take showers and naps, browse the internet, drink coffee, and perhaps do laundry and other activities without having to travel to different locations throughout the city. VA is already starting to conduct estimates and obtain tentative financial commitments for the project, which could be finalized in as few as two or three years. Stay tuned for future updates.
