Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Marine Corps Veteran M. Jeanne Bartelt. Jeanne served from 1943-1946.
Jeanne was born in July 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. Inspired by her father’s service as a submarine sailor, she joined the Marines believing it to be the best service. Jeanne served in the Women’s Marine Corps during World War II as a first drummer. During her service, Jeanne achieved the rank of Corporal and was a platoon leader for her company.
After her service, Jeanne earned a Bachelor’s in Physical Education from Illinois State University and a Master’s degree from California State University, Sacramento. She taught various Physical Education classes from kindergarten to college-aged students. Jeanne advocated for and was consulted with to improve California’s physical education program through teaching guidelines, curricula and handbooks. Through her contributions, Jeanne earned the Honor and Verne Landreth awards from the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
She passed away May 22, 2013 in Sacramento, California. Jeanne is survived by her partner, Sandra Archer.
We honor her service.
