Bill was born in New York in March 1927. He was drafted into the Army in 1945 and was stationed in Italy. There he served as a disc jockey for the American Forces Network, an Armed Forces Radio Station.

Bill started his career on Broadway in the couple of years leading up to his service in the military. After graduating from Northwestern, Bill success on both the big screen and television. Some of his well-known roles include Dr. Mark Craig on St. Elsewhere, KITT on Knight Rider and Mr. Feeny on Boy Meets World which was later reprised in the spin off Girl Meets World.
