At VA, we know that former military members bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to employers. That’s why hiring Veterans is a priority for us. In fact, a total of 123,608 Veterans — more than 30% of the workforce — serve at VA, according to the latest federal government data.
Our first-hand experience with recruiting former military members is one of the reasons why Monster.com and Military.com recently tapped us to provide insight on hiring America’s heroes.
Darren Sherrard, Associate Director of Recruitment Marketing at VA, contributed to the job site’s new “Veteran Hiring Guide: How to Recruit and Retain America’s Best,” offering data and powerful insights on the topic.
Sherrard addressed several key benefits that come with hiring Veterans, including the diversity it can bring to the workforce — a hot topic for today’s companies. According to Pew Research, racial and ethnic minority groups make up about 40% of active-duty military. Hiring from this population not only contributes to a company’s diversity initiatives, it can help create an inclusive culture.
“America is made up of a diverse population, and the military is a representation of the diversity of all of America,” Sherrard wrote in the guide.
Collaborations like these help companies and organizations realize the value in recruiting and retaining Veterans in meaningful careers.
