If you receive VA benefit payments through a pre-paid debit card or paper check, there is a simpler, quicker and more secure way to receive the benefits you have earned: Direct deposit allows your money to automatically arrive in your bank account – on time, every time.
What you’ll need to start receiving your benefits through direct deposit
With direct deposit, you no longer have to wait in line at the bank or pay fees to cash your VA benefit checks. However, you do need to link your benefit payments to a bank account before your money can be deposited.
If you don’t have a bank account, the Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP) can help. With VBBP, you can access a low- to no-cost checking account, as well as other services from a network of military-friendly and federally insured financial institutions. Participating VBBP banks and credit unions will work with you to set up an account or help you qualify for an account so you can use direct deposit.
If you already have a bank or credit union account, all you need is your current account number and routing number. Both numbers are typically found at the bottom of your personal checks.
Update or enroll online
To improve security and increase efficiency, all direct deposit enrollment and update requests are now made online.
You can update your direct deposit information in your VA.gov profile by visiting va.gov/change-direct-deposit/. If you have questions about the direct deposit process, call our helpline at 1-800-827-1000.
