Veterans can shop for savings at their local commissary this holiday season.

In January 2020, Veterans with a 0% or more disability rating became eligible to shop at defense commissaries worldwide. The commissary benefit is a huge money saver and can be a vital resource for Veterans and their families.

Preparing for the holiday season can bring added stress. To alleviate that stress, we’re inviting you to come home to holiday savings at Your Commissary.

Enjoy savings for the season

During December, the Defense Commissary Agency is collaborating with its industry partners so you can come home to holiday savings on products that could help make your season merry and bright! We encourage you to check our website, our sales flyer and with Your Commissary locally to learn more about the details and effective dates of these promotions where you shop.

For example, a turkey is traditionally the centerpiece of the any holiday feast, so it’s important to snag the best quality turkey at the best price while you can. That’s why we’re offering select brands of whole-body frozen turkeys at commissaries worldwide for 48¢ per pound through December 31, while supplies last.

Your commissary makes meal prep magical

Sit down and take a break. While you’re working hard on the rest of the meal, let us lend a helping hand so you can serve some delicious appetizers.

You can order meat and cheese platters through Your Commissary’s deli manager in the store, or online through Commissary CLICK2GO. Fresh fruit and vegetable trays are also available for order by calling Your Commissary’s produce department or contacting the produce manager in the store.

Special orders for special occasions

Commissaries worldwide are offering special orders through December 31  to help you get the festive ingredients you need to make your favorite holiday dishes. Depending on your commissary’s availability, you may place special orders in the following departments: grocery, deli/bakery, sushi, meat & seafood, produce or specialty shops.

You can fill out the special order form to get started, but plan ahead to allow Santa’s sleigh enough time to arrive with the products on your wish list. We also encourage you to check with your store regarding specific product availability, especially at overseas locations where some restrictions may apply.

Give the gift of groceries

One of the things that makes giving the gift of groceries so special is that anyone is allowed to buy a commissary gift card as a gift, but only our authorized customers may use them. Plus, you’re helping others in the military community create holiday memories they will never forget.

The cards sold online are offered in $25 and $50 denominations, while those sold in stores are “open value,” meaning that you can choose to load as little as $5 to as much as $300 on the card.

Come home to holiday savings

No matter how you choose to celebrate, even if it’s still different than “normal” with the ongoing pandemic, please know that we’re here to support you and we’re proud to be part of the military community. We want you to come home to holiday savings because we strive to make Your Commissary feel like an extension of home and deliver the value you have earned through your service.

From all of us at the Defense Commissary Agency, we wish you Happy Holidays and a joyous New Year!

Kinda like a lot of other gifts from the VA. All vets qualify with just minimal qualifications. You must submit a sworn statement that you were standing on the court house steps in Phoenix Arizona July 10, 1998 at two o’clock pm. There had to be a minimum of three feet of snow on the ground and the statement requires the signatures of the mayor of Phoenix along with at least three city counsel members signatures.
OK, you are now qualified. You have at least one blessing. You can purchase a turkey for forty-eight cents per pound. I can drive four blocks and purchase one for twenty-nine cents per pound at Food Max. All of this is a blessing. Now you have to convince some dictator general to permit a lowly civilian to enter HIS base like the person commented about a base in Colorado I anxiously await the next gift from the VA.

I was turned away at the Dover Air force Base to shop at the commissary because my Va

card did not show any form of disability. The V A has given me a10% hearing lose due to
    my service on submarines.

That is a good question on zero+ disability, spouses and dependents, location, and base commanders decisions.

I’m a Veteran, but not a retired veteran. Am I able to take advantage of your new commissary program for veterans? and if so is it just during the Holidays or year round? Also do i just show my VA medical card

Commissary is not that good of a deal. You can go to local store and get better price. Prices keep going up plus shelves are empty. Not like it used to be.

I am all for the idea of having the commissary available to service connected veterans, the problem is that in the area where I live the bases are mostly National Guard and Reserve areas and of course no commissaries within 100 miles or more. It would be kind of nice if those bases could have something like a commissary for us to go to? Is that even possible? Just frustrating in my opinion.

I’m not sure what “0% or more disability” implies. I’m a veteran of the Korean War, with no combat duty. No disability. Can I shop at a commissary?

    • Army Veteran December 23, 2021 at 11:27

It means that you submitted the proper paperwork to the VA to see if you qualify for a disability rating and they followed up with a “no” you have a zero disability rating. It’s a piece of paper that basically says you went through the process of being rated

[Editor: A 0% rating is a grant, not a denial. It means that your condition is service connected and, should it worsen over time, you could apply for an increase.]

    • Bill Redding December 23, 2021 at 12:14

The “0 Percent” means the VA has “agreed” (admitted) that a vet’s particular disability — when he/she filed a Disability Claim — IS Service-Connected (S-C), but that’s all, and it’s not severe enough to warrant any % rating to, meaning, not even 10% severity (there is no 5%, just 10, 20, 30, 40, etc. on up to 100%). Consequently, with a 0% rating, there’s no $$ (monthly VA Disability Compensation) associated with it.
Being “awarded” a 0% rating might not seem like anything — given the vet gets no monthly $$ from it — but this BIG point is being missed: Even a “0% rating” is a WIN for a vet who has filed a VA benefits Disability Compensation claim, since the VA “admits” a given disability IS Service-Connected, so if in the future said issue gets worse, the vet can file a claim (request an Increase in Disability Rating, Form 21-4142, IIRC) for it, and if he/she wins — gets awarded a 10, 20, 30% (whatever) rating — those DO have a monthly $$ amount. A VA Disability HAS to be Service-Connected so it agreeing a disability IS SC is a big deal…a huge First Step (if you will) in the Disability Claims process.
But if a vet can’t even get the VA to make the service-connection in the first place — he/she can’t even get 0% “award” from the VA — said vet gets nothing. So winning even a “0% rating” is a victory as it’s very UN-likely a disability is going to get any BETTER as one gets older, so over time, a “0%” can go WAY up!
      Hope that’s helpful.

I was informed by commissary personnel that the commander of Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs has determined not to let veterans without (discernable) disability percentages be allowed to shop in his commissary. I do have a zero – disability annotated on my card, But also daily wear a pair of hearing aids provided by the V.A. nearly five years ago. Does this latest news release apply to all commissaries Stateside or is shopping still at the whim of each Base/Post commander?

Can I shop in Quito, Ecuador?

  16. Hector Alano December 22, 2021 at 21:11

If at all possible, request that all base command begins to allow that spouses or dependents of veterans to also be allowed entry into all military shopping facilities and the likes. By limiting entries to only the veterans and not our spouses makes us feel unwelcome and as if we are a second class citizen. We veterans have also served our country and our spouses have also endured the times when we were away in deployments as they take care to keep the family together in our absence. Thank you, please consider this simple request and we hope that spouses will someday be allowed in the military bases.

I’ve just been approved for a 10% disability from the VA, my question to you is how and what do I show to prove my eligibility to take advantage of my commissary
and other privileges such as national parks etc. etc….Thank You, I look forward to your help…Michael Bartlett

    • JON WALKER December 23, 2021 at 13:56

      Michael,
Base Access – Take you VA card and head to the main gate that issues passes for your local installation, show them your ID and the will get you registered into the system. You will have to go back annually and do this again.

National Parks – Find your local office go down and present them with your VA card/DD-214 and they should issue both a card for your wallet and a Vehicle Plaquard. This will give you access and a discount when camping in National Parks and Monuments.

Some States also have this Alaska for instance The State Parks issue a sticker that allows for free camping in most of its campgrounds and discounts at some privately ran ones.

Commissary/PX access has not been a problem as long as you have base access.

  18. Phillip Gareau December 22, 2021 at 21:04

Is this correct?? A veteran with 0% disability or more?
In other words, anyone who is a veteran can shop the commissary?
    And the exchanges.
What do I show them? My VA medical ID card?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
