On July 11, the 2013 class of Tillman Military Scholars gathered in Chicago for the annual Pat Tillman Leadership Summit.
As recipients of scholarships from the Pat Tillman Foundation, the next generation of Veteran and military spouse leaders learned how to synthesize social movements, write about their own stories and successes, and the basics for running for public office, among other classes and breakout sessions.
I’ve recapped the event over at TIME, but the video above is worth checking out. As a few of the dozens of scholars in attendance explain, the scholarship isn’t simply about a well-connected network of leaders (which it certainly is), or really about the money. It’s about the opportunity to serve in some capacity after the military, and to carry the principles and values learned in uniform into the rest of society.
These folks will be a group to watch in the coming years—not only in the board room or Capitol Hill, but on the ground impacting lives at every level. If you want to be a part of the next class, keep an eye on the application page around Veterans Day.
