Vaccination event for Veterans and others experiencing homelessness demonstrates VA’s Fourth Mission in action

In addition to vaccinating Veterans, VA has offered the vaccine to non-Veterans as part of the Fourth Mission, which includes providing support for national, state and local efforts during public health and other emergencies. This support was evident on June 3, when VA held a COVID-19 vaccination clinic outside its Central Office in Washington, D.C., for anyone — not just Veterans — experiencing homelessness.

Months of planning and support of Arizona Western College staff let Tucson VA bring the COVID-19 vaccine to Yuma. Over 400 Veterans were spared the four-hour drive to the medical center.

Update: SAVE LIVES Act allows VA to soon provide COVID-19 vaccinations to all Veterans, their spouses and caregivers

VA has begun work to implement the expansion of COVID-19 vaccinations to all Veterans, caregivers, spouses and CHAMPVA beneficiaries under the SAVE LIVES Act. We still have a limited amount of vaccines. We’re working to determine how quickly we can begin to offer vaccines to these other groups.  In accordance with the law, we must prioritize vaccinations and health care delivery for Veterans enrolled in VA care.
