Black History Month

During National Black History Month, today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Andy D. Anderson, who was killed in action in Iraq.

This is the third installment in a three-part series on the officers and men of the 349th Field Artillery Regiment in World War I, featuring First Lieutenant Everett Johnson, a black officer, and Sergeant Robert Samuel Chase, one of Johnson’s non-commissioned officers.

As our country’s celebration of Black history comes to a close, a profoundly moving experience reminded me of the rich history of selfless service and sacrifice that Black Veterans have made to this nation.

Today’s VA embodies the spirit of the many Black men and women who were ground-breaking in history and continue to inspire us today. Pausing to remember their legacies and service.

This February, while the nation celebrates Black History Month, VA’s Homeless Programs Office (HPO) recognizes that our history of accomplishments preventing and ending homelessness among Veterans is built on the work of trailblazing Black men and women serving this country during war and in peace time. Among these notable individuals is Jesse Brown, a decorated disabled Vietnam Veteran who in 1993 became the first African American Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

During National Black History Month, today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Shelia Anthony, who served two tours in Afghanistan.

During Black History Month, today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Vincent K. Brooks, the first African American cadet brigade commander.
