The Sioux Falls VA Medical Center pilot program for helping Veterans coordinate care with community providers cuts down confusion and time spent on the phone for Veterans seeking care outside of VA. The program is now fully operational with additional staff to assist Veterans, their families and caregivers.
The New York State Health Foundation hosted a Veterans’ health conference that addressed the question, “Can the VA and community-based care coexist?” And in a word, yes, they can. Former U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, the Honorable Robert A. McDonald, along with several other Veterans and providers discussed this and other topics at the May 14th conference held at the New York Institute of Technology on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
Under the VA MISSION Act, it will be easier for eligible Veterans to find a community provider in VA’s network, make an appointment, and get timely, high-quality care.

The summit brought together community providers in New Hampshire and VA staff to learn about VA’s community care claims and reimbursement process.
Beginning Oct.1, community care authorization, coordination, billing and payments will take place directly between VA and the Veteran’s community provider until contracts are awarded for the new community care network.
Veterans may be eligible to receive care from a provider outside of VA in their community when VA cannot provide the care you need. This type of care is known as “community care,” and is paid for by VA.
The proposed recommendations seek to modernize VA by reducing bureaucracy, increasing accountability and improving delivery of services to America’s Veterans and their loved ones.
“Our outside providers are an essential part of our network and we need to improve our system of payments for their services," said VA Secretary Dr. David J. Shulkin.
